House Coleman.
Morningside , Johannesburg. Completed 2009.
The site of this house is a pan-handle off a busy street in Morningside. Two existing stands were combined that created a narrow long stand with a short north frontage.
The clients brief and the site orientation led to a series of barn like structures that create an important courtyard that forms the centre of the family entertaining.
The kitchen, entrance hall, covered terrace end entertainment spaces all link with this courtyard that houses a sheltered pool as well.
The house is designed to welcome activities like entertaining of large groups, cooking and eating, sitting at the outside ingle nook in winter and swimming in the fantastic Johannesburg summer weather.
Different finishes were used to define the different functions of the barns, corrugated iron for the entertainment shed, textured plaster for the main barn and stone for garaging and services. A sociable house for a sociable family with a zest for life and a magnificent south African art collection. |
